Forget about Garibaldi - or count Camillo Cavour for that matter ! - the real unification of Italian regional cuisine is happening right here.

In the 70s the Nordend district of Frankfurt was a bastion of the student movement. And the Pizzeria da Alberto enjoyed cult status as the meeting point of many characters who now play leading roles in German politics and social life. They would stand for hours around bistro tables, sipping Chianti and discussing everything from Adorno and Marcuse to Luigi Riva's extra-time goal against West-Germany during the world-cup semi-final in Mexico.

The standing endurance of aforementioned gentlemen has, of late, declined considerably so it was time for Alberto to offer his illustrous clientele a little more comfort and quality. A few houses away the Trattoria da Alberto came to life. Great care was taken to recreate the feel of typical trattorias and tons of stone and wood were brought in from Italy.

In traditional rustic atmosphere – other that white starched napkins are standard - down to earth “casalinga” cuisine is served in a very Mediterranean and relaxing setting. The pastas are all made “alla mama” and the catch of the day is not from the day before yesterday. A small but varied wine list rounds up the offer.

A genuine insider tip, away from the tourist trial and yet a mere 15 minutes walk from the city center! If good traditional cuisine at very moderate prices is what you are looking for, da Alberto will never disappoint. And in summer you may enjoy all this “al fresco” on the charming terrace.
